HOW COULD RETAIL DESIGN BE BETTER ADAPTED TO THE DISABLED AND ELDERLY CONSUMER?

I am a final year Interior Architecture and Design student at Nottingham Trent University. I am conducting a research project which is duplicated as a dissertation into ‘How retail design could be better adapted to the disabled and elderly consumer’ and would like to invite you to participate in answering a questionnaire I have compiled to aid my research into this topic.

I have chosen this area of study as disability is a growing factor in the UK and worldwide, as a designer who has worked within industry and retail I have see that the disabled and elderly consumer is often an afterthought when designing retail environments and spaces for public use. I believe that more could be done to make this area of design more inclusive and provide a better consumer experience, by taking into consideration the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 and putting it at the forefront of our minds when designing. My theory is that, as designers what we have to remember is that any modifications made in the re-fabrication process of retail will ultimately be accessible to the mobile user but not so much the immobile one, so if retail was designed for the immobile and elderly in mind as a basis it would still be inclusive of all consumers.

By you participating in this questionnaire you will provide vital information as to the difficulties you face but also the experience you expect as an impaired or elderly consumer. Results collated within the questionnaire will be used for this to aid this research topic. All questions will be publihed on the online version of my reseach project to comply with the University marking police. You can access website via  http://saraislim.wix.com/retaildesign
